Is Project: Hail Mary worth the watch?

closeup

Very rarely do I watch a movie in theaters anymore. The theater we have in Garden is not bad but when compared to the comfort of my own couch, I usually end up waiting to watch the movie. But Project Hail Mary was one movie I could not wait to watch. I had very high expectations for this film with people online stating that it was already a top movie of all time. While I do not think that the movie is quite that good, it did exceed my expectations. The visuals in this movie were nothing short of stunning. The use of color in films has always been one of my favorite things to analyze and this movie gave me a lot to look at. The makers of this movie knew what they were doing with everything you see on screen. The colors, the camera techniques, the characters, everything, looked absolutely beautiful. The story also  was a high stakes but heartwarming adventure that kept me intrigued the entire time. This was no easy feat as the movie does have a run-time of a whopping 2 hours and 36 minutes. I think the story used up every second perfectly though, not a single scene felt wasted and like the movie would be good without it. The acting was also incredible, starring the great Ryan Gosling. Despite being the only on-screen actor for the majority of the film, Gosling still manages to crush his role and build off the energy of Rocky. Rocky’s portrayal was also something special. In the modern landscape of cinema, many studios would have rushed to use computer-generated imagery (CGI), or even AI now for the alien. But the crew instead opted to 3d-print a puppet for the movie and this choice was absolutely a great one. The way Gosling’s character is able to interact with Rocky is something that just could not have been done with CGI. The film actually features a crazily small amount of CGI for a modern science fiction movie. While I cannot find any information on how some of the more intricate space scenes were made, the movie does boast a no green screen production. My guess is that a lot of the spacewalk scenes were made in a studio with a video wall and then enhanced with CGI. Overall, I would highly recommend this film, it was a very compelling story with interesting characters and stunning visuals. To sum the whole movie up in one word, gorgeous.
